Question by Ciara: Irish 5th Year//LC advice?
Ok so I’m going into 5th year (just finished TY) and I’m starting to think about the leaving cert, college and beyond. Up until a week ago I had no clue on what I want to be but I since researched and decided I’d love to be an actuary because I love maths and it sounds like a fun job I’d enjoy (most people would disagree). Anyway I just have a few questions!

1. The course is currently 540 points which is alot. I did quite well in the JC without study so I was wondering would I be able achieve 540 points with alot of study? (JC results below)
2. Would I benefit from Yeats in Galway?
3. I am still unsure about which business subject I want to do. I signed up for Accountancy but want to change. Which is easier (I know that should’nt make me pick a subject but still) between Business and Economics?
4. I am thinking of doing Applied Maths after school… Should I take on an extra subject?

My LC subjects are:
Maths, English, Irish, French, Physics, History and 1 business. (all honours)

My JC results were:
B=Science, Business, Religion, History, French, Irish* and Art
A=Maths, English, Geography and C.S.P.E.

(All honours, but I was very surprised at my Irish result. I had honestly thought I had failed).

Help?!
Thanks!

maybe you would benefit from yeats but just make sure you can afford it before you ask to go. if you work hard you can achieve anything as you seem to be quite inteligent. just remember to work hard but not to over do it as there is more to life than getting a good job.

1. to get 540 points you need to work your a$ $ off. you would have to start this September and put a lot of work in.
2. i have no idea what yeats in galway is
3. I do business and love it, but if you like numbers you may want to do economics.
4. yes if you think that you have a weak point eg Irish you should go down to pass and don’t think about using it for points. only pick up one extra subject because you dont wanna spread yourself too thin

1. You would need to study loads!!! Like, right from the start. I’m only in 2nd year, and I really want to do something in medicine, and I’ve pretty much started studying now [stuff outside the junior cycle]…if I didn’t get the points, I’d be crushed!
2. If you’re serious, Yeats would help, but only if you feel you need that extra bit of help and I don’t think you do – you did really well in the JC.
3. If you don’t want to have anything to do with accounting, you probably shouldn’t do accountancy! Economics is better for you, I think, as you’ve sad you like maths.
4. I think it would be a good idea to take on an extra subject. My school only lets us take 7 subjects for the leaving cert, but I’d like to take an eighth. I think the extra study would be worth it.
Good luck, hope everything goes well!

Most people can do it with alot of study.

The teachers really help the students prepare for the JC through the classwork and homework they give you, that is probably why you didn’t need to study that much. The LC is different altogether, you have to motivate yourself to study and that is the main challenge. You need to keep at it, be focused, organise your time well and study nearly every day.

If you are a maths whizkid, then why not take applied maths, but if it will put extra pressure on you and affect the other subjects you do then don’t bother. Maybe spend the time practicing Irish instead. When I was at school, geography was one of the easiest to get an A in, make an appointment with your careers/guidance teacher. Ask the business and economics teachers what percent of their students get an A.

Have a back course too, maybe mathematics. Look into all the different routes you can take to get into the career you want.
